Summer Spending Survey - 2022
Every year, we conduct a survey to find out how people plan to spend during the Festive period, including their budgetary expectations, travel plans, gifting ideas, and holiday destinations. Our annual report has received coverage in major print and broadcast media sources. There has undoubtedly been a significant change in figures since last year due to a volatile economy, including price inflation and a change in the repo rate, which has influenced how individuals spend.
About our respondents
This year we surveyed 8,540 people from all walks of life to learn how they intend to carry out their year-end plans.
Total projected spend
Based on annual population numbers, we estimate that festive spending will result in a total expenditure of R226 billion.
Festive budgets
South Africans expect to spend 6% less over the holidays than in 2021.
Servicing extra costs
We see a favourable increase in the number of people using their planned savings.
Gifting - who can expect a present?
South Africans love to give gifts - and our annual survey shows how our respondents intend to do so.
Shopping trends - online vs brick-and-mortar
For the past few years, we've been reporting on a growing movement toward e-commerce, as South Africans have steadily switched to purchasing products online rather than visiting brick-and-mortar stores. This was a large movement through covid. Our estimates show that online purchasing has increased to 26%, but in-store buying is still preferred by 77%.
Travel - car, plane, or by bus?
On South African roads during the Festive season, there is a major exodus. We've noted shifts and trends in how our respondents intend to travel to their vacation destinations.
